Original artworks (classified under Chapter 97 in most customs codes) are generally duty-free in many countries, but almost all destinations charge an import VAT (Value Added Tax) or sales tax. This is usually paid by the recipient to the courier before delivery.

  • United States: Original artwork from Canada is duty-free under USMCA. However, U.S. Customs and Border Protection may assess standard state sales tax, which varies by state (typically 2.9% to 7%).

  • European Union (e.g., France, Germany, Spain, Italy): Import VAT is charged on all imported goods, typically ranging from 17% to 27% of the item's value plus shipping costs. Original artworks are exempt from customs duty (tariffs).

  • United Kingdom: Artwork imports are subject to a reduced effective import VAT rate of 5% for qualifying items over £135.

  • Australia & New Zealand: Both countries charge a Goods and Services Tax (GST) on imports: 10% in Australia and 15% in New Zealand

These charges are the responsibility of the customer and are not included in the purchase price.

Lost or Damaged Shipments

If a UPS package arrives damaged, the recipient should keep all packaging materials and contact us, the sender (jamiem53@outlook.com), who is the primary customer and we must initiate the claim with UPS within 60 days, providing photos, the tracking number, and proof of value (invoice) for investigation and potential reimbursement, as UPS may need to inspect the item.

For the Recipient
Don't throw anything away: Keep the damaged item and all original packaging (box, packing peanuts, tape, etc.).

Contact the Sender : Notify us immediately.

Provide Information: Give the sender photos of the damage, the packaging, and the shipping label.

Upload photos showing:

The damaged item and how it was packed.

A close-up of the shipping label.
The outside of the box, showing damage.
Package dimensions (height, width, length).

Await Inspection: UPS may need to physically inspect the package and contents at your location.

Submit Value: Value of the painting will be submitted to UPS in the form of invoice in the claim.

Key Things to Remember

Time Limit: Claims must be filed within 60 days of the scheduled delivery.

Documentation is Key: Insufficient documentation can delay or deny your claim.

Payment to Sender: Any approved claim payment goes to the shipper, not the recipient. If the claim is approved and they send payment back to us then you have a choice of either a refund of your money or arrangement of replacing the painting.

Provide clear photos of the artwork and packaging.

Claims will be reviewed and addressed on a case-by-case basis by UPS. Insurance is purchased through shipping company and claims will be subject to their regulations.
